The dev-team is working intensely on Europa Universalis: Rome. The beta has opened and we are busy looking at the initial feedback. So far so good.

Personally I have been really happy with the design of the EU: Rome box. That is what our Art Director Stefan Thulin along with Josefina and me have been working on these last days. I think this box has a real shot at becoming a classic. Along with the special we are planning for the web shop orders this makes for the most fun I have had for a product… ever! Europa Universalis 3, Frontline: Fields of Thunder and several new contracts for Gamers Gate makes us dream of a very Happy New Year.

We get more and more requests from distributors, publishers and developers who want to work with Paradox and Gamers Gate which feels like a proof that we're doing the right things.

Our plan for next year will be to combine download only products, like Victoria: Revolutions, with box products and some minor upgrades available through Gamers Gate for our current games portfolio. The Collectors Edition box will be limited to one print run and therefore all people interested need to get their hands on the box within the first weeks of release. We normally do not order that many boxes for our own web shop, but I hope we ordered enough. It seems like everyone didn't have the same opinion on the market situation. While some people openly declared that there are no good independent game developers anymore, I would like to say the exact opposite. Instead of "bubble economy" games where people need "only 2.5M EUR to complete the game" I found more small, hard-working, indie developers than ever before. From my point of view the business has gone from all flash to being actually some substance. I spent the past weekend in Moscow and this was my fourth time in the Russian capital in one and a half years. The reason for my visit was mainly the Igromir show (a Russian version of E3) and to promote EU3 to the Russian press. The show was very much like E3; loud and lots of people.

We also found some REALLY interesting strategy games from well-known teams and had the chance to visit Nival Interactive and discuss the development on Frontline: Fields of Thunder. This game is going back to basics with the more hardcore-oriented gameplay of Blitzkrieg 1, it should really be something for our gamers.

We also had the chance to drink vodka (what else?) with some people from THQ and Buena Vista Games as well as visiting the street market. Next time you'll see me I'll be wearing a Russian hat and a CSKA hockey shirt. The idea of the game is to go back to the basics in the Blitzkrieg series.

Blitzkrieg 1 was a great game, while the 2nd game was so-so to the core fans of the first game. We wanted to move back to the Blitzkrieg 1 feeling and add all details possible of the Battle of Kursk. Paradox is no exception from this rule and therefore I spend a lot of time reading previews of Europa Universalis 3 in order to get the views from other people. Some interesting quotes can be found here:

The Gamespot preview says:
"Europa Universalis III seems to be making some bold changes to the series' deep strategic formula. Assuming everything falls into place, the game's streamlined interface and in-game help options should be more accessible to new players, while the highly open-ended, historical campaign structure may just swallow expert players whole for countless hours"

The recent IGN preview says:
"As always with these games, we could go on for hours and hours explaining the intricacies of other systems. Let's just say that the game has about a hundred other cool systems in it that you can employ to gain an advantage over your enemies."

Firing Squad adds:
"Europa Universalis III looks to be shaping up as a really solid sequel that retains the heart and charm of its predecessors, and builds on this quality foundation with a variety of new features. Easily one of the most anticipated strategy games of the coming year"

What I like the most is that most people think we have kept the original deep gameplay, while still making it more accessible. This was one of the outspoken goals of the game, making it easier to learn yet harder to master than its predecessors.

Can we live up to the hype? I sure think so.

Tanked in Kursk!

We have decided to team up with Nival to publish a new game from the creators of the Blitzkrieg series. Our publishing has picked up some really great titles and our NY office is working very well. Looking at 2007, I can see many interesting things ahead.

First of all Europa Universalis 3 our biggest and most costly project to date due for January 2007. In the months to follow we have 3 more games planned for release. One of the games is from a developer well-known for their strategy games and is a great partnership for Paradox. So why did we choose Victoria for the expansion? Well, it's not our greatest commercial success, but I believe Victoria, for some reason perhaps have the most active fan base of all our games (per sold title that is). This is our way of saying "keep up the good work" to the people in the Victoria forum who so far created 17,013 threads and 243,245 posts since the release late 2003.

If this works out well we will of course look into working with this model for more games.

Fredrik

Soccer...

The football (what Americans refer to as "Soccer") World Cup has not started that well from Swedish point of view. Soon you'll all know :)

You should have an update on what to expect from the game 1-2 weeks after E3.

Fredrik

The Paradox Empire

Players continue to flock to Gal Civ II, especially after the latest v1.1 update, providing players with a massive new amount of content! Think lots of flashing lights, loud noise, booth babes, huge screens everywhere etc.

For us who work with people all over the world it's also a great way to have meetings in one location rather than spend all waking hours on an airplane (which we do often enough anyway!). Read below:

· Maus: Weighing in at 188 tons, this was the Germans' mightiest tank. Hitler verbally placed an order for the Maus tank with Ferdinand Porsche on 8 June 1942. Two prototypes of the Maus tank were supplied to the Wehrmacht in 1944, but both were destroyed on the testing grounds before they could fall into the hands of the advancing Red Army. A reconstruction made up of parts from both destroyed prototypes is now on display in the Russian museum of Kubinka.

· Goliath: This was a light remote-control demolition vehicle (816 lb) which could steer explosives into enemy positions. Its original purpose was to blow up enemy positions or even tanks from a safe distance. Since the explosive charge could not be dropped, the entire vehicle was blown up in the process. In the game, the German Goliath destroys tanks.

· Messerschmitt 262: The Me 262 was the first jet fighter in the world to be used in battle against other machines. Its wings were of a revolutionary design and made it faster than any Allied plane. The German construction was the world's first jet-powered plane. The game features a whole mission focusing on the first jet plane in the world.

· T-28/T-95: The American Super Heavy Tank was intended to assert itself in attacks on heavy fortifications and be safe from any other tanks previously produced. A newly developed 105 mm quick firing cannon was to be its main armament. Though this vehicle was originally called the T-28, it was renamed T-95 after the decision was made to mount the gun on the front of the hull rather than on a turret.

· Rheintochter: A German anti-air missile that was to support their AA guns. It was radio-controlled from the ground.

· Sturmtiger: A combination assault gun and artillery vehicle. The lack of a rotating turret made the tank look like an assault gun. It was initially used as a supporting unit for bombarding fortifications and bunkers, and later in support of regular tank units.

Susana

A popular steel book

It seems like the GalCiv2 steel book limited edition was very popular among the gamers. We are still growing and developing our business in an industry that is suffering from a hangover after several years of what looked like never-ending growth. Not only do we sign titles from experienced and well-known teams, but we are also learning to be better in our own publishing and production efforts.

It is also great to see that others appreciate what we do. I found one example browsing through Gamespot last week, where a gamer posted a comprehesive list of all promising PC games slated for 2006 release". By "promising" the author meant games with big chances of scoring at least AA, while extremely small chances of scoring below 7.

Out of the five games Paradox will publish during the first 6 months 2006, all five made it on to the list. Lists like these and feedback from many other parties in the industry are indicators that we are constantly strengthening our position as one of the leading strategy games publishers. However, it is important to stress that we are not striving to be the biggest publisher out there, our main goal is to publish the games we like and that we know our fans will like.

An extract from the list (with user comments):

Rush for Berlin
From Stormregion (makers of Panzers, which got 8.8 here)

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday
An add-on to 8.3 game

Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords
Sequel to best space-based 4X game in recent years (8.4 from GS)

Heart of Empire: Rome
A city-building game by DeepRed(makers of Monopoly Tycoon, also a city-builder (which scored 8.5 at GS)

Take Command:2nd Manassas
Sequel to Bull's Run. Which is considered the best civil war game ever made. It got Wargamer's 5 stars and award of excelence, Gamezone rated it 8.5. ComputerGamesMagazine called it "one of the most dramatic wargames you'll ever play".

Keeping in mind that we have have only presented titles for the first six months so far, it looks like we will have a great 2006 indeed...

Fredrik

Historically correct vs politically incorrect

Recently we have received lots of inquiries about our upcoming Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday expansion. Questions vary from what features will be added to the title to why the Paradox Interactive development team decided to go from games with accurate historical information to a "what-if" World War III scenario where we may freely interpret history our own way, thus possibly walking into a politically sensitive area.

Initially we can say that the Doomsday scenario (1945+) will not be for those looking for a historically correct game. However, if you belong to those who have ever wondered about what a war between the allies in late 1945 might have turned out like, the game is definitely something you should look into.

In brief, our reason for choosing to develop Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday can be described in three bullets:

- World War III - we wanted to put a lot of effort into what could have happened in a war between the allies. Pure speculation mixed with all historical data for the time period and techs that cover the time period until 1953.

- Intelligence features. The extra tab in Doomsday will add an extra meta-level of gameplay where nations in peace will be able to have their own "invisible" conflicts. This opens for new and cool ways of playing, especially in multiplayer.

- Perfection. When Hearts of Iron 2 was released we were very happy with the result and we still consider it one of our best titles ever released. However, much like anything we could have perfected a few things even more and we took time to add things like automatic sliders in Doomsday, thus perfecting the gameplay of the series even further.

Mixing the three bullets above with lots of new historical information, events, scenarios and a brand new graphical scenario editor, the result is spelled Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday. Did I mention the pre-orders start today?

To summarize you could say that Doomsday is leaning more towards the politically incorrect than the historically correct.

The first multiplayer AAR from inside the Paradox office should reach you within a few weeks. However, I still find it fascinating to see the approach that the guys from MadMinute Games have taken to this in Take Command 2nd Manassas.

The 5 gigantic battle maps in the game are all made based on reasearch from the Library of Congress and I've seen numerous screenshots placed next to photos of actual places and in comparison they are almost identical. Now that's realism!

This title has the potential to become huge in the US for obvious reasons but with the great and challenging gameplay as well as the replayability of carryover techtrees, 48 scenarios and more this is definitely something for strategy fans anywhere. I have already been getting e-mails from players anxious to get a hold of their own copy.

We'll keep you posted on this one, don't forget that our newsletter is the best way to get our latest news delivered straight to your inbox.

Sign up newsletter

Susana

New York

Paradox Interactive has been a global publisher for a few years now and North America is one of the markets where we are particularly strong. Our publishing business world-wide has increased from a couple of titles each year to a fantastic 5 title line-up, and that's just for the first half of 2006!

As PR and Marketing manager I have traveled to the US quite extensively to meet with writers for the bigger sites and magazines like Gamespot and PC Gamer but also specialist media like the Wargamer and Armchair General. It's great to meet all these dedicated people who have turned their passion into careers, and showing our games in person, games which are often very rich in detail and scope, allow for interesting discussions and questions.

So when Paradox asked me if I wanted to move to New York to set up a fully functioning US office, I did not have to think about it very long. While I'll continue to work with PR and Marketing, my focus this year will be to ensure this New York office is around long after I've returned to Sweden. So in a few weeks I'll make the transition across the Atlantic and continue to strengthen Paradox Interactive's position in North America. I can't wait!!

Susana

Galactic Civilizations II

We are getting closer to a release of Galactic Civilizations II and the anticipation in the office is mounting! I know we have mentioned it before but our limited edition DVD Steelbook is shaping up to become a real collectors item and it's great to be premiering this format on such a fitting title.

Now that we know so many of you enjoy the extra material we have started putting in our boxes, we have managed to pull some strings and will pack this box with goodies. With our busiest line-up yet for 2006, we have spent most of the holidays creating plans for the months to come.

Galactic Civilizations II (Europe) Gal Civ II website
Hearts of Iron II Doomsday (Worldwide) Doomsday
Take Command 2nd Manassas (Worldwide) Mad Minute Games
Rush for Berlin (North America) Rush for Berlin website
Heart of Empire Rome (North America)

All are titles we are very excited to be publishing but I keep dreaming about Drengin Lords and Civil War heroes - does that mean I'm taking my job a bit too seriously?

A New Year requires New Year resolutions and the team has made a few. Developers all over will claim that as long as a game is good enough it will sell and market itself, however having worked in the industry for a while, I've seen that packaging/marketing/sales is quite significant. If gamers do not know about your game, it does not matter how fantastic it is. So these are our resolutions for the year:

1. We will sign at least 2 new and exciting titles for 2006, current line-up not included.
2. We will have 75,000 members on our forums by the end of 2006. Currently we have 51,000.
3. We will update this blog once a week, holidays excluded.

See ya!

Kind regards
Susana Meza

A New Title!

We finally signed Take Command: 2nd Manassas with Mad Minute Games! We've been watching the company for over a year and after playing their first game (Bull Run) we wanted to sign their upcoming title. Now we're there and the game is to be released on April 18 in most markets.

I have been playing the beta of Take Command: 2nd Manassas during the Christmas holiday and I have to confess I had problems defeating the AI.

OK, I am not the greatest strategy gamer in the world but I am quite sure this game will be a challenge to the fans of our games. The level of detail on the commanders and troops is amazing.
